Synthetic Turf vs. Natural Grass: A Winter Performance Comparison

shellie69

It’s winter, and you love the breather you get from having to worry about your lawn. Every spring and summer, you swear you’re going to have synthetic turf installed so that you don’t have to spend so much of your free time fertilizing, mowing, trimming, seeding, and watering it. You’re quite sure you aren’t even doing everything necessary for it to stay as healthy as possible. This is the year that you need to give us a call here at SYNLawn of Northeast Ohio, and you can have it done before it’s time to do all that spring maintenance.

What are the Benefits of Synthetic Turf?

We would have titled this section “the pros and cons”; however, there aren’t many cons to having synthetic turf installed. Natural grass goes dormant in the winter to survive the harsh weather conditions, making it appear thin and brown. This occurs when the soil temperature remains at or below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The good news is that it doesn’t grow until the temperatures warm up again. Synthetic turf will retain its plush texture and beautiful color throughout the winter, displaying its resiliency.

When spring comes, natural grass must be nurtured back to its lush state. The only maintenance synthetic turf may need in the spring is gentle brushing if snow has flattened it at all. It won’t be damaged by ice and frost, and its high drain rate allows melting snow to abate quickly. It’s such a low maintenance option compared to natural grass, which can die over the winter. You may need to plant more grass to fill in patches where it didn’t survive. Synthetic grass won’t need aeration or any form of weed control, and you won’t need to test the soil, like you would with natural grass, to determine what mixture of supplements it needs. Synthetic turf is the low maintenance option that allows you to spend more time doing what you love.

Fall lawn maintenance for natural grass is performed with the intention of preparing it to survive the winter with the least amount of damage. You can avoid fall lawn maintenance when you have synthetic grass. You don’t need to apply high-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage strong root development. You won’t have to perform the arduous process of aeration AGAIN or overseed it to compensate for the potential loss over the winter.

Additionally, artificial turf is pet-friendly, perfect for under playsets, and saves you money in the long run on water, seeds, chemicals, and equipment.

Can You Have Synthetic Grass Installed over the Winter?

Yes, you can! We won’t be able to install it while the ground is frozen; however, it will thaw long before spring, and that’s where we come in. The ambient temperatures must remain above freezing and the ground must be thawed for some adhesives for turf tape to set properly. The turf itself is composed of material that’s designed for applications in all climates and environments, so the cold weather won’t harm it in any way.

We know that you like to perform upgrades around the interior and exterior of your house; however, some things are better left to the experts. Here at SYNLawn, we have tools, hardware, and equipment designed to handle the intricacies of synthetic grass installation in a variety of weather conditions. We know how ice can create unevenness or bumps in newly installed surfaces, how temperature affects the laying out and stretching of the turf, and how long it needs to cure or set in various temperatures.

When you see the contrast and comparison on paper, it’s a no brainer to call us here at SYNLawn of Northeast Ohio for synthetic turf installation. It takes many documents and research to figure out how to make your natural lawn thrive without disease, while you only need to see a few words on how to take of artificial grass. We invite you to visit our website and any other research to assess the possibilities. Spend more time with your family enjoying the outdoors while you can instead of having to do yardwork all spring, summer, and fall.
